There are different ways that you can find to do
good SEO and to work your way onto page one of Google. One of the biggest mistakes that people tend to make is to assume that it can be done really fast by trying to get things up and running in an instant.

But by trying to increase the speed of your strategy in this way, you don't give your work the time it needs to develop in the eyes of Google. For instance, when you add blog posts or new content online that is related to your business, that content first needs to be indexed by Google and it needs to get found. It also needs good quality links heading towards it so that Google can see that other people online are finding it useful.

So even though you finish your content, it needs more work for it to get the respect it needs from Google.

Moving too fast doesn’t provide you with the time it takes to you may get your additional, related content and to have backlinks starting to take effect. These things can all happen, but it can take a while to show. Everything needs a little space to work its way through the internet.. Sometimes through using
Google My Business, this can happen quite quickly but in most cases, just like in SEO, it can take months to get really impactful results.

What do I do while I wait for my business to show up to my local audience?

While that content is finding its feet in the online world you still need to keep at it, creating more of the same so that you have more assets online that give your business the chance to get more exposure.

You obviously can't do all of this in one day. Allow Google the time it needs to make those decisions about which is the most relevant business, and who should rank in one of those prime spots as one, two or three on the first page of Google. In other words, going from the content that you are putting out there, Google will choose which business they should show that would provide the best answer to the search query. Plus, who is in the correct physical location.

Keep in mind that Google is the world’s number one search engine for a reason. People trust Google to save themselves time from having to look too far to find a result that accurately suits their needs.

Google maintains their position because they give the most relevant results. That means that for you to be in any of those top three spots of
Google My Business, and for you to show up on the first page, you need to ‘convince’ Google that your business IS the most relevant as a result for ‘that search’.

Only after that, you need to prove to the person who is doing the searching that you are the best business that can help them. But, you won't get a chance to even do that if you don't show up on that first page of Google.

So what is the best way to be visible on Google My Business?

I hear you saying Keywords… But you would be wrong!

Not absolutely wrong. But there is one other thing that takes more importance when it comes to ranking in Google’s local listings, and that is Categories.

Every time there is any discussion about SEO, Google My Business, or any type of online search, you will hear people mentioning keywords. But when you are up against your competition on the world’s number one search engine, Google is looking for something totally different..and that something else is, categories. Although the Category only beats keywords by a nose in the ranking factors that are important to Google, it still is number one. This is something that all people need to take very seriously.

Most people don’t realise that having the right category is currently even bigger than your keywords when it comes to top ranking factors. The chart below shows you the top 4 ranking factors (source: Whitespark), in the order of what is regarded as most relevant.

Google Local Pack Top Result Factors

It’s true that in organic listings, keywords are still highly relevant but Google is aware of the keyword-stuffing that happens so they find other relevant factors that can prove the worth of a business when someone is looking for the right answer.

Finding the right categories

Now this may or may not come as a surprise to you but it is very likely that your top competition has got their categories correct. This means that it's worth doing some back Engineering to figure out what categories these top  ranking holders are using and implementing the same into your own.

This means that you can add the most regular category that is being used into your own business or industry area. To upgrade your Google My Business categories, you will need to go into the business dashboard and update your the information there.

Or you can contact The Web Connector and they can help you set this up.

Don’t leave blank areas in your GMB dashboard

A very important thing to remember when you fill in the information in your Google My Business dashboard is not to leave blank areas because everything that’s there, is there for a reason. All of this information combines to help Google in coming to their decision of whether or not your business should show up. So any fields that have been included to help in Google’s calculations should be filled out.

The best thing you can do to help your business get found by your prospective customer, is to concentrate on turning up in these results. And you do this by filling in all of the fields, as clearly as possible, and keeping everything as relevant as you can to your business. That way if someone is searching for something that your business ‘does’ offer, and they are in the right area, you have the best chance of showing up. This is the main area where Google my business differs so much from regular SEO optimisation, which can include all types of different content that generate a result, but in Google My Business it will only show up if your location matches that or the person searching (or their requested suburb).

When you are listed in Google My Business, your business is optimised to be visible to people within an area that they can literally get to your business from. And that is what makes the biggest difference for being listed here. The whole point of it is to serve the people who are browsing the internet in a way that helps them find facilities that are local to them. When you are trying to get ranked on the organic listings on the first page of Google, you can get ranked and found in any location, or even in any parts of the world, but that is because the information that you are providing could be relevant to a world-wide audience.

Also, in organic listings (as is the case in SEO ranking) many pages online are there to help people in finding solutions to their problems. That means that it is not always relevant to finding a business. This sort of result could simply be online content that provides more information to the end user.

Therefore, for this reason, the person providing those answers really does not need to be in close proximity to the person who's doing the searching.

However, through good strategies you can create content that helps you get found in local areas, even within the organic listings. Then you will be showing up in the   organic listings and in the Google My Business listings and be in two different areas on page one of Google which creates quite a dominant presence in a place where many people would be looking.

If you are the business that can supply them with the product or service that the user is looking for, you will have a better chance at getting chosen.

However, these days more and more people are becoming familiar with the fact that Google My Business is for businesses and services as a search result, and that the organic listings are for solutions and information. But there are also people who just automatically go straight to the organic listings when checking through their results.

Conclusion

By being visible in both of these sections (Google My Business and organic listings), you will have a much higher opportunity of being seen and chosen, regardless of which area is the preferred method by that person who is doing the searching.

The final thing to add is that in this case if you were to have a paid ad where you show up at the top of the page in the sponsored section, as people move down to the Google My Business area and then to the organic lists, you will be showing in every section. That is, a great way to have a strong and dominant presence and really having a lot of impact on page one of Google.
